MEDIA RELEASE: Maldon Takes a Stand

Created: Friday, 23 October 2015

The Maldon Neighbourhood Centre is working to prevent domestic violence in our community.

The Maldon Neighbourhood Centre is proud to announce the action they are taking to prevent domestic violence. Maldon Neighbourhood Centre Coordinator Amy Atkinson says, ‘It’s time for us to acknowledge that domestic violence is a big issue for all people, whether you are directly or indirectly affected. We invite you to come along to the training program ‘Take a Stand’ which is the first step in the Neighbourhood Centre’s year-long focus on preventing violence against women and children.”

Women and children are most at risk of violence. 1 in 3 women will experience physical violence from the age of 15 (ABS, 2006). The effects of violence at home are felt at work, schools and throughout a community. Domestic violence is responsible for 40% of all Australian murders (Aust. Inst. Criminology, 2004). It can also have ramifications on others, who might be uncertain about how to intervene, fear for their own safety or experience distress.

Sue Davidson, Maldon Neighbourhood Centre Committee of Management says, ‘We at the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre are working in partnership with Women’s Health Loddon Mallee to deliver their training program, Take a Stand and we hope you can join us.

This program has helped to train people from workplaces, sporting clubs and the community about domestic violence, violence prevention strategies and how to support people who may be experiencing domestic violence.

Ray Stevenson, White Ribbon ambassador says, ‘I became a White Ribbon ambassador to encourage men to take responsibility and play a role in preventing men’s violence against women. Preventing domestic violence really is everyone’s business.”

We hope that you can join us on Monday 30 November from 6.30 – 8.30pm at the Maldon Neighbourhood Centre to learn violence prevention strategies and to Take a Stand against domestic violence. Please RSVP for catering purposes.
